Founder of 'IndiaSareeChallenge'

‘IndiaSareeChallenge’ – A deep sense of loss at seeing saree wearing culture die

among urban women made Sapna create the Fb group IndiaSareeChallenge, to revive it. Just aping the west, Indian were giving up their own heritage and culture thinking that it’s all redundant outdated and old-fashioned. This loss of cultural identity seemed intolerable to her. She did not want the saree to go the same way as the exquisite Japanese Kimono, which has become ‘extinct’ as no one wants to wear it any longer. And so, in April 2015, a saree-wearers’ group came into being on social media, where the members would post their pictures in India’s national drape. Sapna Khandelwal’s ‘India Saree Challenge’, which has grown from its starting tally of 20 members culled from her own contacts, to 20,000 saree-wearers worldwide, promotes the saree on the global stage gives the traditional craftsmen of the country a fresh lease of life.

For the past twenty-six years, Sapna’s persona and life ethos have been sculpted by her Gurus through an intensive and systematic study of the Vedas, Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita. She learnt to appreciate and value the immense wisdom of our ancient Indian heritage, culture and traditions. She learnt that the saree, the oldest unstructured garment in the world, are climatically favourable for use in our tropical climates. She learnt about the systematic destruction of India’s weavers and crafts under colonial rule, to benefit the cloth factories in the UK, and it made her blood boil. She also learnt about the immense medicinal and emotional benefits of the Indian woman’s traditional ‘solah shringaar’ (sixteen types of adornments) and was aghast at the way we are frittering away our legacy out of ignorance and blind aping of the West.

Co-Founder of 'Devditi Foundation'

Blessed by the Gods and passing on the blessings Sapna co-founded the non-profit trust for urban women empowerment along with Vandana Gupta. Originally conceptualised as the physical, functional arm of IndiaSareeChallenge, they unveiled in August 2015 at the World’s first-ever Saree Flash mob, performed by more than 50 members of all ages at Saket Mall, Delhi.

A women’s organization with a social conscience, we undertake environmental responsibility by conducting drives such as tree plantations, reduce-reuse-recycle, and knowledge dissemination sessions, waste segregation, women’s hygiene, breast cancer, education for the underprivileged and employable skilling for girls from underprivileged homes and female convicts in Tihar Jail.

Our biggest charitable venture to date, however, is the Devditi Humanitarian Bank, where articles of need for specific recipient bodies, such as leper centers, old age homes, schools, hospitals, etc. are identified, collected from members and given to them.

Regular events to celebrate festivals and occasions, as well as get-togethers and out-of-town trips to heritage-rich places, are a regular feature of the group. Apart from the enjoyment and women-to-women bonding, these are also a means to reinforce the cultural connect of the group, take in educational visits to the sites of traditional textile and artisanal work such as bagru, dabu, benarasi weaves, etc. These are followed up by the promotion of traditional craftsmen’s work and placing of bulk orders to boost their precarious livelihoods.

With wide coverage by Indian media as well as on the Internet, Devditi Foundation (‘Dev’ from Vandana’s daughter, Devyani, and ‘diti’ from Sapna’s daughter-in-law, Aditi) had arrived with a bang in the public eye.
